| Carrara: the capital of marble |

Carrara, located in north-western Tuscany near the Ligurian Sea, is considered the world capital of marble. The reputation of the city is linked with its famous marble, known throughout the world since Roman times, so precious to be called "white gold". The name Carrara is also linked to the marble, it is thought to derive from "Carara" = place of the wagons, as the wagons that transported the blocks of marble. The town was enlarged and altered in 1557 by Alberico Malaspina I, realizing a new boundary wall that enclose inside even the suburbs outside the old medieval walls
( Grazzano Caffaggio ) and created square Alberica. In the nineteenth century the city had a new territorial expansion due to population growth determined by the development of stone industry.
Castello Malaspina di Carrara (XI sec.) - Academy of Fine Arts
The ancient Carrara's castle, dating from the eleventh century, has been since the thirteenth century, when the secular forces in the city by strengthening the fortress, the symbol of the conquest of the autonomy from the power of Luni bishopsLater the defensive building was transformed into a superb manor house, flanked by the Prince's palace built by Alberico Cibo Malaspina in the sixteenth century. In 1805 the building became the headquarters of the Academy of Fine Arts.
Museo Civico del Marmo
The Civic Museum of marble was created in 1982 on the initiative of the town of Carrara, to collect and document the culture of marble. Divided into 6 internal sections and an external area, the museum offers a fascinating picture of the local heritage to the visitors: "Roman archeology and history of the territory" with historical artifacts discovered in the quarrythe richest " Marmoteca of Italy", “Industrial Archeology " with tools and machinery for mining and processing of marble by the Romans to the present; “Technical Applications ", " I Calchi" plaster and the reproductions of icons for restoration
replacement, "Modern Sculpture" with works in marble, bronze and other materials.
The Park of the Apuan Alps
The Apuan Alps are developed for 60 km along the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea through the areas of Versilia, Lunigiana and Garfagnana and is known for its marble, large underground karst cavities and the presence of different types of rocks that make possible presence of diverse and contrasting environments, favoring the rich flora and fauna of the area. Spots to visit in the park: the water and the marble quarry museum Fantiscritti, the country columns Carrara; the medieval village of Casola in Lunigiana, Equi Terme with caves and spa, the Canyon of the groove of the village and Equimar Valley of Vinca.
